Once upon a time, there was a merchant. He had many things to sell in town. He ordered his servants, “Carry all these things to town with me.”
He said to the smallest servant, “You are the weakest one. Take the lightest load.”
“Thank you,” the servant said. However, he chose the biggest one. It had all the bread for their trip.
“You are foolish! That is the biggest load,” the merchant said.
“But sir, we’ll eat the bread every day. So, this load will become smaller and smaller,” the small servant explained.
The surprised merchant laughed and said, “You are the smallest and weakest servant. But you are also the cleverest.”

むかしむかし、ある商人がいました。彼は町で売るものをたくさん持っていました。商人は召使いたちに、「これらのものすべてを私と一緒に町へ運びなさい」と命じました。
商人は一番小さな召使いに言いました、「お前は一番弱いから、一番軽い荷物を選びなさい。」
「ありがとうございます。」と召使いは言いました。しかし、召使いは一番大きい荷物を選びました。それにはこの旅のためのパンが全て入っていました。
「お前はなんて愚かなんだ！それは一番大きな荷物だぞ。」と商人は言いました。
「でも、ご主人さま、私たちは毎日このパンを食べます。だからこの荷物はどんどん小さくなるんですよ。」と小さな召使いは説明しました。
驚いた商人は笑って言いました。「お前は、一番小さくて弱い召使いだ。でも、一番賢いな。」
