Naomi was a ten-year-old girl from Japan. She was in America with a homestay family.
On the second day, the family was making soup. The host mother told Naomi to put some water on the stove.
She thought, “How do I put water ON the stove? It will become wet.”
So, she took a pitcher of water, then poured it on the stove. The water made a big mess* in the kitchen.
The host mother saw it and said, “Oh, I’m sorry, Naomi. I mean put water IN a pot. Then put the pot ON the stove.”
Now, Naomi understood, “Ohhh, I see! I’ll try my best to understand English better.”

ナオミは日本から来た10歳の女の子です。アメリカでホームステイをしていました。
翌日、ホストファミリーはスープを作っていました。
ホストマザーはナオミにコンロの上に水を置くよう言いました。
ナオミは、「コンロの上に水を置くって、どうしたらいいのだろう？濡れてしまうだろうし。」と、思いました。
ナオミは水差しを取り、コンロの上に水を注ぎました。その結果、キッチンは水でビショビショです。
それを見たホストマザーは言いました。「あら、ごめんなさい、ナオミ。鍋の中に水を入れるという意味なの。それから鍋をコンロの上に置いてね」
それでナオミは「あ～、なるほど！もっと英語を分かるように頑張ろう。」と、納得しました。
