Mukai Chiaki is one of Japan\u2019s modern heroes. She was a successful doctor, loved to go out of this world, and became the first Japanese to go up into space twice.
\nAt age 31, she found a newspaper article about new astronauts. After reading it, she thought, \u201cCan a scientist like me really go into space? I thought only pilots could be astronauts!\u201d She decided to try it.
\nIn 1994, she was selected for the Space Shuttle of the United States. It was not easy, but her experience as a heart surgeon at Keio University Hospital helped her in training. After traveling, she said, \u201cIn space, it was hard to tell where the floor was and where the ceiling was.\u201d
\nOn her second flight, Chiaki studied about sleep and weightlessness using her scientific background. She also invited children to become involved. They helped with her tanka poem and named her new teddy bear. She even communicated using sign language! She liked saying \u201cWorking in Space\u201d because she could help Japanese people understand more about space.
\nIn Chiaki\u2019s hometown, there is a museum where young people can learn about science and space in an exciting way. \u201cWe should believe in ourselves and be more confident,\u201d she tells them.
\n\u201cChildren are the future of our society,\u201d Chiaki once said. \u201cWe should support them as much as we can. This is necessary for all of us.\u201d So just like Chiaki followed her dreams, she says to everyone, \u201cIf you want to do something, go for it!\u201d<\/p>\n
