The Last to the Finish (255 words)

One day there was a great but dying king. He had twin sons, Jerico and Samuel. Each brother had his own beautiful white horse. Which brother would become the next king?
The king had a message for them. Barton, the king’s advisor read it to the brothers, “The kingdom will be for the man whose horse loses the great race.”
“Let’s race tomorrow!” said Jerico. “We’ll go from the forest to the castle!” said Samuel. Barton said, “Remember that your horse must lose the race and then you will become king.”
Early next morning, both brothers and horses were ready. “On your mark, get set, go!” yelled Barton. The two started racing at full speed. However, they slowed down because they didn’t want to win the race.
Finally, Samuel asked, “If we continue to go slow until we stop, nobody will win or lose the race.”
“How can we decide the loser of the race?” asked Jerico.
Barton arrived and said, “Young men, I’ll tell you my idea.”
After listening to Barton’s idea, both sons jumped on the horses and raced towards the castle as fast as they could! Jerico and Samuel were trying their best to win the race!
What did Barton say to the two brothers? Why did they race so quickly to the castle?
Barton told them, “Get on your brother’s horse and make that horse win the great race! If that horse wins, the horse’s owner will not become king. The owner of the losing horse will become the new king!”

昔、死に際にいる偉大な王様がいました。その王様にはジェリコとサミュエルという双子の息子がおり、兄弟はそれぞれ美しい白馬を飼っていました。どちらの兄弟が次の王様になるのでしょうか。
王様には二人への伝言がありました。王様の補佐人であるバートンは、兄弟にそのことを伝えました。「王国は、偉大なレースに負けた馬の飼い主が王となるものとする。」
ジェリコが「明日レースをしよう！」と言うと、サミュエルは「森から城まで行こう！」と言いました。バートンは「自分の馬がレースに負けないといけないことを忘れないでください。そうすれば、あなたは王になれるのです。」と、二人に言いました。
翌朝早く、兄弟は馬の準備を整のえました。「位置について、用意ドン！」バートンが叫びました。二人は全速力でレースを開始したものの、二人共レースに勝ちたくないので、速度を落としました。
とうとうサミュエルは、「このままゆっくり走り続けて止まったら、誰もレースには勝てないし、負けることもない。」と言いました。
ジェリコは、「どうやってレースの敗者を決めるのだい？」と尋ねました。
バートンがやってきて、「若者たちよ、私の考えを話そう」と言いました。バートンの考えを聞いた後、二人の息子たちは、馬に飛び乗り、城に向かって全速力で走り出しました。ジェリコとサミュエルは、レースに勝つために全力を尽くしました。
バートンは二人の兄弟に何と言ったのでしょう？なぜ二人はあんなに速く城まで走ったのでしょう？バートンは二人にこう言ったのです。「お互いの馬に乗って、その馬をレースに勝たせるのです！その馬が勝てば、その馬主は王になれません。負けた馬の馬主が新しい王様になるのです！」
