Do you like cherry blossoms? Japanese people like watching them bloom to signal the start of spring. They can be seen all over Japan and are a symbol of the country.<\/p>\n

Cherry trees can also be seen in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. Actually, those trees came from Japan, too! In 1912, the mayor of Tokyo presented 3,000 trees to America to thank the people of the U.S.<\/p>\n

In a small ceremony, the wife of the American President and the wife of the Japanese Ambassador planted the first cherry trees near the Potomac River. <\/p>\n

A few years later, the Americans sent some dogwood trees to the Japanese people. A group of American kids presented the trees as a sign of goodwill and thanks. <\/p>\n

In 1981, many Yoshino cherry trees were destroyed by a flood. America sent some cuttings of its trees to Japanese scientists to re-plant them in Japan. In 1999, a cutting from a 1,500-year-old tree from Gifu was planted in America.<\/p>\n

Now, Washington hosts a yearly cherry blossom festival. It lasts for two weeks and more than one million people go to visit. Just like Japanese people, Americans also walk and sit under the trees and enjoy the beautiful scenery.<\/p>\n

Because of its peaceful and beautiful image, the cherry blossom has become a great connection between the two countries. It\u2019s not only a symbol of Japan, but also a symbol of the great friendship between Japan and the United States.<\/p>\n
