An Act of Sportsmanship (Level 4 – 263 words)

In April 2008, Sara Tucholsky, from Western Oregon University, was batting against Central Washington University in softball. It was the final inning with two runners on base.
Sara hit the ball hard and it went over the fence! Her first home run ever was also the game-winning home run!
Her team was cheering as she rounded first base, but she missed it. The rules say that she must step on each base. But when she ran back, she injured her knee and fell down.
Sara crawled back to first base, but she collapsed. She was exhausted and disappointed. The rules also said that her team cannot help her move around the bases. However, something special was about to happen.
The first baseman from Central Washington, Mallory Holtman, asked her, “Are you OK? Which leg did you hurt?”
Sara said, “The right one, I can’t stand on it.” Mallory’s teammate, Liz Wallace, came and then they had an unbelievable idea.
Mallory and Liz picked up Sara with their arms under her legs. Sara placed her arms over their shoulders.
They took Sara to second base. Mallory told Sara to step on the base with the good foot. She did.
Everyone stood up and began applauding. The trio moved to third base and Sara touched it. They finally went to home plate. Many players, coaches and fans were crying because of the selfless act by the rival players.
Sara’s team won the game, 4-2. However, Mallory and Liz were winners in life. They cared more about helping a person in need than just a game.

2008年4月、西オレゴン大学のサラ・トゥコルスキーは、ソフトボールのセントラル・ワシントン大学戦で打席に立っていました。最終回、二人が出塁していました。
サラが打ったボールはフェンスを越えました。サラの初ホームランは、サヨナラホームランとなったのです！
チームから歓声が上がりましたが、サラが一塁を回るとき、サラは一塁ベースを踏み外してしまいました。ルールでは選手は各ベースを踏まなければなりません。しかし、走って戻ろうとしたサラは、膝を痛めて転んでしまったのです。
サラは這うようにして一塁に戻りましたが、倒れ込んでしまいました。サラは疲れて落ち込んでいました。ルールでは、サラのチームメイトは、サラがベースへ移動するのを助けてはいけないことになっています。ところが、思いがけないことが起きようとしていました。
セントラル・ワシントンチームの一塁手、マロリー・ホルトマンがサラに尋ねました。「大丈夫？ どっちの足を痛めたの？」
サラは言いました。 「右足よ、立てないの。」マロリーのチームメイト、リズ・ウォレスがやってきて、二人は信じられないことを思いつきました。
マロリーとリズは、両腕をサラの足の下に入れて、サラを担ぎました。サラは両腕を二人の肩にかけました。
マロリーとリズはサラを二塁に連れて行ったのです。マリーはサラに大丈夫な方の足でベースを踏むように言い、サラはその通りにしました。
観客は立ち上がり、拍手が沸き上がりました。三人は三塁ベースへと向かい、サラは三塁ベースを踏みました。そしてついにホームプレートに辿り着きました。多くの選手、コーチ、ファンが、ライバルチームの二人の無欲な行為に涙を流しました。
試合は、4対2でサラのチームが勝ちましたが、マロリーとリズは人生の勝利者となりました。二人は試合結果よりも助けを必要な人に手を貸すことを大切にしたのです。
