Barton was a very funny and clever man but also very poor. One day, a member of the King’s staff saw him tell some interesting stories. He brought Barton to the castle to entertain the King.
The King said, “I’ll give you 100 coins per month to be my jester.”
Barton had a better idea. He said, “My King, instead please pay me one coin the first day. Then, double it every day for only ONE WEEK.” The King thought the jester was not very smart, so he agreed. Barton just smiled.
After the first day, Barton had one coin. The second day, he had two coins for a total of three coins. On the third day, he got four coins, so his total was seven. He giggled each time he was paid, but the King couldn’t understand. After one week, he had 127 coins!
The King saw that Barton was a very clever man.

バートンはとても面白くて賢い人でしたが、とても貧乏でした。ある日、王様の家来はバートンがおもしろい話をしているのを目にしました。家来は王様を喜ばせるため、バートンをお城に連れていきました。
王様は言いました。「1カ月コインを100枚あげるから、私の道化師になりなさい。」
バートンはもっと良い考えを思いつきました。「王様、代わりに最初の日には1枚のコインを、それからは毎日2倍のコインを1週間だけください」と。王様は道化師があまり賢くないと思っていたので、バートンのアイデアに同意しました。バートンはただ静かに微笑んでいました。
最初の日に、バートンはコインを1枚もらいました。2日目にはコインを2枚もらい、合計3枚になりました。3日目には4枚のコインをもらったので、合計７枚になりました。バートンはコインをもらうたびにほくそ笑んでいましたが、王様には理解できませんでした。一週間後、バートンは127枚のコインを手に入れました！
王様はバートンがとても賢い人だと気づきました。
